Subhash Gayi is also known as ‘Showman of the Millennium’. He is a director, producer and screenwriter, but do you know that he started his career as an actor. He took part in a talent competition, in which only three people were selected out of 5000 contestants. One of them was Subhash Ghai. He launched Jackie Shroff. Subhash Ghai was born in Nagpur. His father was a dentist in Delhi. Subhash graduated from Film and Television Institute (FTII) in Pune after studying commerce in Rohtak, Haryana. Ghai had told during an interview that he came to Bombay (now Mumbai) after passing out from FTII, but he was not allowed to enter any studio as he was an outsider and no one knew him. With the help of the techniques given in these books, he tried to enter the film industry. During this time he came to know about the United Producers Filmfare talent contest and participated in it. Out of 5 thousand contestants, only 3 people got selected. One of them was Rajesh Khanna, the second Dheeraj Kumar and the third Subhash Ghai. Rajesh Khanna got the role soon, but Ghai got the job after a year.

Did you know that Subhash Ghai started his career as an actor in Hindi cinema. He played small roles in films like ‘Takdeer’ in 1967 and ‘Aradhana’ in 1969. He was the male lead in 1970’s ‘Umang’ and ‘Gumrah’. He made his directorial debut in 1979 with the film Kalicharan. He got this movie on the recommendation of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha. As of 2016, he has written and directed 16 films.

In the 80s and 90s, Subhash Ghai worked a lot with Dilip Kumar. He introduced Jackie Shroff from the movie ‘Hero’ in 1983. Also in 1985, the movie ‘Meri Jung’ helped in boosting Anil Kapoor’s career. He gave ‘Karma’, ‘Ram Lakhan’ and ‘Trimurti’ to Jackie and Anil. Everyone remembers the film ‘Khalnayak’ released in 1993, in which Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff were in lead roles. Its songs were a huge hit. Like ‘Nayak nahi khilayan hoon main’ and ‘What is behind the choli’.

Subhash Ghai made Pardes film

In 1997, Subhash Ghai directed the movie ‘Pardes’. It starred Shah Rukh Khan, newcomer Mahima Chaudhary and Apoorva Agnihotri in lead roles. In 1999, ‘Taal’ came, in which Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor were in lead roles. Both the films were superhit films of that era. After this, many films were flops, such as ‘Yaadein’ in 2001, ‘Krishna’ released in 2005.

After this Subhash Ghai took a break from direction and became a producer. He produced films like ‘Aitraaz’, ‘Iqbal’, ’36 China Town’ and ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’. In 2006, he opened a film institute in Mumbai named – Whistling Woods International, in which students are taught production, direction, cinematography, acting and animation.

After taking a 3-year break from direction, Subhash Ghai returned in 2008 and released Black & White. Then brought ‘Yuvraj’. Both the films did not perform well. In the year 2018, he announced at the Cannes Film Festival that he is co-producing the Osho Rajneesh biopic in association with the Italian production house. The film will be directed by Laxman Sukameli. His film 36 Farmhouse was released in 2022, which he wrote and produced. You would hardly know this interesting thing that Subhash definitely appears on the screen in every of his films, even if he appears for a few seconds.

Was married in 1970, has two daughters Talking about personal life, it is said that there was a time when her name was associated with Barkha Roy, sister of actress Reena Roy. But in 1970, Subhash Ghai married a Pune girl, Rehana, who came to be known as Mukta Ghai. Presently he is living in Mumbai with wife and two daughters Meghna Ghai Puri and Muskan Ghai. Meghna is the president of her father’s institute. According to reports, Subhash had adopted Meghna and she is married to producer Rahul Puri.
