Drushyam 2 Movie Review: Venkatesh’s frame-to-frame remake is faithful and engaging

Director Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal surprised everyone with Drishyam 2, which was released on Amazon Prime Video in February 2021. The film, which was a sequel to the film of the same name, lived up to expectations. In fact, it is safe to say that Drishyam is one of the most successful thriller franchises where sequels had some substance and were not made just for the sake of cashing in on the popularity.

After the success of Drishyam 2, director Jeethu Joseph teamed up with Venkatesh Daggubati and the cast of Drushyam for the sequel in Telugu. Drushyam 2 follows the story of Rambabu (Venkatesh), his wife (Meena) and his two daughters, Anju (Kruthika) and Anu (Esther Anil). Six years ago, the family covers up the murder of Varun. SP (Sampath) knows that Rambabu is hiding something and tries hard to gather evidence against him. When he gets a breakthrough, he reopens the case.

Will Rambabu hatch an elaborate plan to safeguard his family? How will he escape the police this time? These questions are answered in Drushyam 2.

Here’s the trailer of Drushyam 2:

Director Jeethu Joseph worked on the script of Drishyam 2 for several months and his hard work is seen in every frame. It is not easy for a director to come up with a sequel that is as engaging as Drishyam. The first part had brilliant twists and turns that remain fresh even after eight years. With Mohanlal’s Drishyam 2, Jeethu Joseph still had some great tricks up his sleeve, which made it look interesting.

Venkatesh’s Drushyam 2 is a frame-to-frame remake of the Mohanlal-starrer. For those who have seen Drishyam 2, the Telugu version might seem laborious and boring. Hence, Drushyam 2 is strictly for those who haven’t watched the Malayalam version.

Unlike Drushyam, Drushyam 2 concentrates more on Rambabu and his family, who are trying to move on. They have committed a crime. Even though it has been six years, they still struggle on an everyday basis. Rambabu cannot let his guard down. His wife is worried about Anju’s future. Anju has panic attacks. And the little one, Anu, has lost zeal and innocence. They try their best to put this one incident behind them. But, they cannot, and it is visible in their eyes.

Venkatesh’s performance as Rambabu is what makes Drushyam 2 entertaining. His measured performance shows his experience in handling a subject like this. Meena, who is reprising her role in the Telugu version, is perfect as well. Nadiya, Esther Anil, Sampath, Kruthika and several other actors delivered decent performances.

When a taut script meets noteworthy performances, films like Drishyam 2 and Drushyam 2 are born. In short, Drushyam 2 is a worthy follow-up to a film that is regarded as one of the best thrillers.

3.5 stars out of 5 for Drushyam 2.
